A Somerset village is to introduce 20mph traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian pathways at a cost of £260,000.
Residents of West Coker have campaigned for some time over the problem of traffic speeding through the village.
The first phase of the work was recently finished. The next phase will see road markings on the A30, drawing drivers' attention to speed limits.
"We need to close the A30, just for one day, said a Highways Agency spokesman.
Tim Carroll, of Somerset County Council, added: "The completion of this phase signals that we will have now met our undertaking to the community of West Coker.
"Because the A30 is no longer a trunk road and long- distance traffic is encouraged and directed along the A303, it is acknowledged that West Coker will not qualify for a by-pass.
"I am pleased that we shall see a genuine improvement of conditions to lessen the impact of existing traffic flows."
