Perch stunt to help bored birds

A parrot keeper is to spend eight hours sitting on a wooden perch on Tuesday to highlight the welfare of pet birds.

While on the perch, Rob Savin, of Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, will be able to talk to visitors.

But he will not be allowed to move around or have anything in his cage to keep him occupied.

By recreating the sterile conditions in which some caged birds are kept, he hopes people will see the importance of keeping any pet happy and healthy.

Inspiration for the stunt, also designed to promote World Parrot Day, came to Mr Savin during a discussion on keeping parrots as pets.

The day, on 31 May, is designed to highlight the welfare and conservation of the world's most endangered bird family.
