Cash boost for park restoration
A 5m scheme to restore and redevelop the grounds of a Wiltshire country park has been given the go-ahead.

Lydiard Country Park in Swindon is expected to get an ornamental garden and large lake, thanks to money from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The council-owned country house has already been restored, with historic furniture and pictures.

A grant of 430,000 for design and survey work is now being provided by the Fund.

The council will then apply for a further 3m in 2005.

Mike Bawden, leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: "Lydiard is one of Swindon's historical jewels and a much loved public amenity.

"With this funding we can look forward to restoring it to its former glory for the whole community to enjoy."
