A classroom has opened at a Leeds hospital for young patients who are too ill to attend school.

Leeds General Infirmary's Learning Zone enables children to join in lessons linked to the core national curriculum.

Children who are too poorly to leave their wards can learn from their bedsides with the help of laptops.

Education Leeds, which is run by the city council, has set up the facility. A quiet study area for older children has also been provided.

Reference books, laptops and science equipment are available to the young patients to help with their studies.

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "As well as providing an essential education which ensures their time away from school does not have a negative impact on their studies, it also helps to provide a sense of normality during what can be difficult times."

Mr Edwards said staff at the facility work closely with the child's school to identify their education needs.
