Legionnaires' probe shuts centre at Ridings School site

A sports centre on the site of the former Ridings School has closed over fears that Legionnaires' disease germs may be present in its water tanks.

Calderdale Council said "the potential for legionella contamination" had been identified at the centre during the decommissioning of the Halifax school.

The authority said an investigation was under way and the sports centre would remain closed until further notice.

The Ridings School, once dubbed the worst in Britain, closed last year.

'Precautionary measure'

The site could now be developed into a community sports complex under plans being considered by councillors.

Head of cultural services at Calderdale Council, Gary Borrows, said the closure was a "precautionary measure".

"During the decommissioning of the Ridings School the potential for legionella contamination was discovered," he said.

The authority is to carry out a through investigation.
