ITV's mothballed studios in Leeds have been saved following the announcement of a £5m investment.

The revamp of Kirkstall Road studios means production of the Yorkshire-based soap Emmerdale will move back to its original home at the site.

ITV Studios said the investment was about "safeguarding the future of Emmerdale".

Operations at Kirkstall had been under review since ITV announced its closure in March, with the loss of 150 jobs.

The studios will be upgraded to allow the soap to be filmed in high definition.

This will give Leeds something to be really proud of

Work is expected to take 12 months to complete and Emmerdale will be moved from its current home on Burley Road at the back of the complex.

Lee Bartlett, managing director of ITV Studios, said: "Few cities outside London can boast production of three hours of prime time top-rated drama every week, and this team deserves the best possible environment in which to operate and work.

"This investment is about safeguarding the future of Emmerdale.

"Giving this highly-respected production team and cast an up-to-date modern purpose-built facility is key to enhancing the quality of our production many years in the future."

ITV currently operates out of six different buildings in the Kirkstall Road complex.

Claire Poyser, director of production for ITV Studios, said: "The main building re-fit means first-class high-definition facilities and there will be enough spare office space to open our doors to a broader creative community.

"We are actively seeking to develop our potential creative partnerships with interested parties in the region.

"This will give Leeds something to be really proud of."
