Man jailed for raping woman, 89

Mauro Lopes
Lopes had admitted two counts of rape

A man who raped an 89-year-old woman after tricking his way into her flat by posing as a police officer has been jailed for nine years.

Mauro Lopes, 31, of Grantham Towers, Leeds, was sentenced after earlier pleading guilty to two counts of rape at the city's crown court.

The woman was attacked on 14 March after Lopes, posing as an officer, said he urgently needed to speak to her.

Police said the victim was now being cared for in a residential home.

Det Supt Steve Payne, who led the investigation for West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "I would like to pay my respect to the victim in this case who has acted with incredible bravery despite the terrifying ordeal she suffered.

"During the incident itself she managed to scratch Lopes which helped us significantly with the investigation."
