Community fight saves post office

People power has triumphed after a West Yorkshire post office was saved from closure following a four-month community campaign.

The Thornhill Edge branch in Dewsbury was earmarked for closure instead of the nearby Savile Town Post Office which was given a reprieve in July.

Since then hundreds of people backed by local councillors and the town's MP have campaigned to keep it open.

Sub-postmistress Una Robinson said it was a victory for the community.

A petition with 2,000 signatures was handed over to Downing Street as part of the community's fight to save the post office.

Mrs Robinson has run the branch for 12 years. Her husband Frank said it showed what a community's efforts could achieve.

He said: "There has been such fantastic backing by the local people, local politicians and the MP. It's a reflection on everyone's efforts and hopefully we'll have a big party to celebrate."

More than 60 post offices across West Yorkshire could be closed under plans to reduce the number of branches nationally.
