City marks town hall anniversary

Leeds Town Hall
Originally the building housed law courts and police headquarters

A series of events are taking place in Leeds to celebrate the 150th birthday of the city's town hall.

The building was designed by architect Cuthbert Brodrick and opened by Queen Victoria on 7 September, 1858.

Two weeks of festivities kicked off on Saturday with a music conference and gala concert.

On Sunday there will be an open day, where people can see displays from the archives, take a clock tower tour and hear the West Yorkshire Police Band.

Special 'Crime and Punishment' tours will take people beneath the steps of the town hall so they can hear the true stories of men and women who were sentenced in one of the building's three courts and visit hidden Victorian cells.

The full programme of events is available on the Leeds City Council website.
