Officer killed when car hits tree

Det Con Graham Mackay
Mr Mackay had served in the force for nearly 24 years

A serving officer with West Yorkshire Police was killed when his car crashed into a tree.

Det Con Graham Mackay, 47, was driving in a silver Seat Alhambra on Park Lane in Methley when his car left the road and collided with a tree on Friday.

He had served with the force for nearly 24 years and was a crime trainer at the police training school in Wakefield.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said officers were trying to establish the cause of the crash.

Det Ch Insp John Halstead said: "Graham will be sadly missed and was a dedicated crime trainer who was always helpful and loved the job.

"He had only just finished delivering a national drugs course on Friday morning to officers from around the country, and was held in high regard by all who knew him.

"The thoughts of everyone at West Yorkshire Police are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time."

Police said Mr Mackay, who lived in Normanton and was originally from north Scotland, leaves behind a wife, two sons, a daughter and a granddaughter.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them.
