Woman in court for dropping peel

The council said dropping peel puts the community at risk
A woman has been taken to court and fined for dropping orange peel out of her car window in West Yorkshire.

Multiple Sclerosis sufferer, Denetta Copeland, was ordered to pay 50 by Leeds Magistrates Court after the fine was sent to her previous address.

The 30-year-old from Roundhay was accused of committing the offence last May, but it took eight months to resolve because of the address mix-up.

Leeds City Council said it would always prosecute anyone who breaks the law.

A council spokesman said: "In Leeds we have a very strict policy against littering.

I didn't live at that address, it is ridiculous, I am not a criminal

"Dropping food litter, apart from being unsightly, also attracts rats and other vermin and those who do it will be fined and prosecuted."

The mother-of-one received the court summons because she failed to pay the initial fine for littering.

Miss Copeland said: "I was told I had been eluding them (the council) for all this time.

"I didn't live at that address, it is ridiculous, I am not a criminal and for me to be branded one and brought down to that level is not fair."

The error happened when council officials contacted the DVLA to trace Miss Copeland's car , but she had moved out of the address the car was registered to two months earlier.

The council added: "The law does not allow local authorities to revoke court summonses once they have been issued.

"While we appreciate Denetta Copeland's position in this particular situation, the council will always prosecute people who break the law and take action where necessary."
