Work has started on a 26m art gallery which will feature the work of Wakefield-born sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth.

The gallery will be a key feature of the city's historic waterfront conservation area.

It will house the city's collection of 20th Century British art, including 30 original Hepworth plasters.

Building work is due to be completed in 2009 and the gallery will open to the public in early 2010.

The gallery has been designed by renowned architect David Chipperfield.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: "I am sure it will attract visitors from all over the world. It is a fantastic opportunity for Wakefield."
