Work is about to start on a £4m facelift for an historic West Yorkshire landmark.

The project to restore Shibden Park in Halifax will also include a new visitors' centre and cafe and a children's play park.

It is being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help transform it into a major tourist attraction.

Gardens and paths throughout the park will also be improved, and its lake will be renovated.

The park, which dates back to 1926, was originally a working estate for families that lived at Shibden Hall.

Fiona Spiers, of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "Halifax's open spaces play such an important role as havens from the bustle of daily life.

"We're thrilled to help restore and open up Shibden Park for as many people as possible to enjoy."
