Police tackle Bonfire Night crime
Police patrols are to be increased in Leeds to kerb anti-social behaviour in the run-up to Bonfire Night.

Rubble and flammable materials will be removed from the city's streets and legal notices served on people who have rubbish on their land.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards officers plan to check the licences of any shops selling fireworks.

Police said data showed there was a significant increase in anti-social behaviour in the run up to 5 November.

'Fun occasion'

The moves are part of a campaign by the police, fire service, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Trading Standards to tackle the problem.

Insp Kate Riley said: "What is meant to be a fun family occasion has for some people become a period which they dread.

"Whilst some may tolerate it because they know it will soon be over it isn't right that residents' standard of living should be encroached upon to such an extent."

She said police officers would be supporting the fire service when necessary to ensure they can carry out their duties without fear of being attacked or abused.
