A medical centre in a suburb of Leeds has been destroyed in a huge blaze.

More than 70 firefighters were called to the Manor Park centre in Bellmount Close, Bramley, on Saturday afternoon.

The roof of the complex, which contains a doctor's surgery, a chemist and a first-floor flat, has collapsed, West Yorkshire Fire Service said.

"The building, which is a big medical centre serving that community, has been totally gutted," said fire service spokesman Brian Saville.

Mr Saville added: "Firefighters broke their way into the premises but were unable to contain the damage.

"Thankfully, there have been no casualties, but I expect this will cause a great deal of inconvenience for people in the area who normally use the centre."

Police closed nearby streets as attempts were made to control the blaze.
