A wild deer which fell into an inner city canal is being nursed back to health at a West Yorkshire dog home.

The animal, named Thumper after it gave one of its rescuers a kick in the leg, was pulled from the Leeds to Liverpool canal on Sunday.

The deer had suffered wounds to its legs and was taken to Whitehall Dog Rescue Home in Leeds.

The animal is being cared for in a kennel while it is nursed back to health by staff.

Owner of Whitehall rescue home, Brian Wheelhouse, said: "It is very unusual to find wild deer roaming our streets.

"It may have wandered down the railway line before falling into the canal as it took a drink. It is staying in a kennel for now while it is checked over by a vet.

"I am looking for a more suitable environment for it to live."
