Councillors approved plans for the first phase of The Sands scheme
Revised plans for the first phase of a £120m redevelopment of Scarborough's North Bay have been approved.

Benchmark Leisure Ltd can now begin work on The Sands project which will see 100 private apartments built on the current site of the Corner Complex.

Objectors had voiced concerns over the design of the new buildings and the loss of the old-fashioned seafront.

But the company said it lowered the height of certain buildings and added facilities after public consultation.

The detailed proposals, which also include designs for holiday accommodation, shops, restaurants and a water park and leisure complex, were first unveiled in October 2005.

Managing director of Benchmark David Rhodes said work was expected to begin within the next three months, with the completion of beachside facilities scheduled for spring 2007.

"We have taken on board all constructive comments and have adjusted our plans accordingly," he said.

"We want to create an attractive and vibrant development at North Bay that will bring new prosperity to Scarborough."
