The west Leeds scheme envisages large green spaces
Residents in Leeds could soon be enjoying a new green space as the council aims to create a "linear country park" in the west of the city.

The new parkland would include guided walks and signposted key routes in the area which would link recreational areas and wildlife habitats.

The park aims to circle west Leeds by joining the Aire Valley corridor with Calverley, Pudsey, Armley and Wortley.

Council leader Andrew Carter said it would enhance the area's appeal.

Linking spaces

Within the next two years it is expected that most of the groundwork will have been laid for people to begin using the park.

The park will be formed by preserving existing green spaces and linking them together.

Mr Carter said: "It will provide a wealth of opportunities for leisure and enjoyment and also encourage activities which can boost health and well-being."

A large-scale consultation is under way with interested parties from more than 20 community groups, land managers and members of the public.

The city council said once the initial stages of the park scheme were complete the focus wpuld shift to medium and long-term plans such as promoting horse riding, orienteering, cross-country running, walking, cycling and conservation work.
