A man who served Leeds for 10 years as a councillor has been given a suspended jail term for possessing pornographic images of young girls.
Lee Benson is no longer a councillor
Lee Benson, 46, of Yew Tree Lane, Colton, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to 12 counts of possessing indecent images of children.
He was caught when council IT staff found the material on his computer.
On Friday Benson, who has been placed on the Sex Offenders' Register, was given a nine-month suspended sentence.
Benson represented the Halton Ward as a Labour councillor for 10 years.
The court heard that some of the images he had looked at on his computer at Leeds Civic Hall contained girls as young as five.
A spokeswoman for the authority said: "Leeds City Council has robust procedures in place to monitor internet and e-mail use, and it was through this process that our IT staff became aware of inappropriate use by former councillor Benson.
"This was an isolated case and was dealt with immediately.
"We alerted West Yorkshire Police and have worked closely with officers throughout their investigation."
