TA soldiers called to Iraq

More Territorial Army soldiers from Yorkshire are to be sent to Iraq to undertake security duties.

A company of 120 troops from the East and West Riding Regiment is due to arrive in Basra in November for a six month tour of duty.

It is the first time a complete company from the regiment has been mobilised.

Before leaving for Iraq the soldiers, who come from all over Yorkshire, will undertake training in Nottinghamshire.

Alert over water algae

Watersports enthusiasts and other visitors are being warned to keep away from Yeadon Tarn in Leeds for safety reasons.

City council officers acted to close the popular lake after potentially dangerous blue-green algae was found on the surface of the water.

The algae can cause skins problems, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Warning notices have gone up all round the lake and a scheduled sailing tournament has been cancelled.

Jail death victim's twin to form help group

The twin sister of a self harmer who killed herself in New Hall Prison in Wakefield is trying to set up a support group to help others like her.

Kirsty Blankby's sister Petra was serving time for arson when she took her own life last year.

Now Kirsty, also a self-harmer, wants to set up a self-help group in their home town of Chesterfield to help others with the same problem.

Street name wanted for estate

Residents are being urged to dream up a name for a new residential development in Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council is looking to the public for inspiration in naming the road which is part of Causeway Crescent in Linthwaite.

Officials say the name should not duplicate or resemble any existing road names in the area and stress that streets are not normally named after people.

Instead the council is looking for names with local links.
