Traffic was brought to a standstill on the M62 in West Yorkshire on Wednesday night following a pile-up involving six vehicles, police said.
At least three people were injured in the accident, which happened after a collision between two cars near an embankment at junction 28.
Eastbound traffic was brought to a standstill and sections of the M1 were also affected, a police spokesman said.
Traffic was restricted to just one lane on the M62, he added.
The injured people were taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield for treatment.
West Yorkshire Police said it was not clear how serious their injuries were.
The road fully re-opened at about 2100 BST.
