A man has undergone emergency surgery after an 8ft (2.4m) steel spike pierced his eye and became stuck in his head.
The accident happened at 0320 BST on Tuesday, as he worked at an Argos store in Forster Square, Bradford.
Firefighters had to cut the rod down to 3ft to allow an ambulance crew to take the 30-year-old to hospital.
The man was conscious throughout his ordeal, an ambulance spokesman said. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation has started.
"He was working for a construction firm who were carrying out some work at the Argos store when he was impaled on the spike," an HSE spokeswoman said.
"He was taken to hospital and HSE inspectors are attending the scene."
