A swan had to be operated on after she was found with an arrow sticking out of her side on a West Yorkshire canal.
A man walking his dog along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in Leeds spotted the swan in distress and with her male mate trying to protect her.
Passers-by managed to trap the swan between two barges and used a hook to capture her and remove her from the water.
The RSPCA took care of her and she has since been returned to the wild.
RSPCA chief inspector Heidi Jenner said she would like anyone with information about the incident to contact the organisation.
She said a vet had managed to remove the arrow and stitch the wound.
