The Earl of Harewood is waiting to hear if he will be allowed home from hospital after being taken ill in London on Thursday.
He was admitted to the Chelsea and Westminister Hospital after reportedly suffering from chest pains.
The 81-year-old began to feel unwell at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
A spokesman at Harewood House, near Leeds, confirmed the earl had been admitted into hospital as a precautionary measure.
The earl's wife and four sons are said to be with him as he waits for a doctor's examination to see if he can return home.
A spokesperson for the hospital has described his condition as "stable".
Lord Harewood is one of the Queen's first cousins and King George V was his grandfather.
He is an adviser to Opera North and is a recognised expert in the field having written major books on the subject.
Lord Harewood has also been president of Leeds United since 1961 and was president of the Football Association from 1964 until 1971.
He became the seventh Earl of Harewood in 1947, aged 24, and inherited Harewood House, built in 1772.
