Dam breach threat for residents
Sandbags being put near the dam
Sandbags are being used to keep the water back
Up to 500 people in West Yorkshire are being issued flood warnings amid fears that a dam could give way.

Calderdale Council is concerned for Luddenden residents near Halifax if the waters breach a dam downstream of Jowler Mill.

A helpline for emergency information and a rest centre has also been prepared at Luddenden Youth Centre in case of evacuation.

A council spokesman said water levels had dropped on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile sandbags have been put down near the dam structure.

"Residents are being asked if they know of anybody who may require additional assistance to evacuate their homes," the spokesman said.

"The council has taken this precautionary action in the interests of public safety and in the meantime the council is investigating who owns the dam."

Water levels had risen due to the downpour which hit the Pennines this week.
