A businessman died after he was attacked near his home in the Alwoodley area of Leeds.
John Luper, 57, was set upon by three or four men at about 2330 GMT on Monday as he walked his dog near his house in Sandmoor Drive.
He was dragged back to the detached home where the intruders tied up his wife and daughter.
The women broke free and raised the alarm. Mr Luper was found collapsed near the kitchen.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The raiders searched the property before fleeing. It is not yet known if anything was taken.

Mr Luper was a director of a clothing firm and a property leasing company.
The house remained sealed off on Tuesday and a forensic examination of the scene was carried out.
One local resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's absolutely unbelievable. This is such a nice place.
"You don't expect anything like this to happen. It's such a terrible shock."
Mr Luper was a life-long member of the United Hebrew
Congregation synagogue in Shadwell Lane.
Rabbi Daniel Levy told BBC Look North that this was the second time the businessman's home had been targeted by thieves.
Alwoodley in north Leeds has attracted some of the city's richest residents including company directors, lawyers and professional footballers.
