England and Leeds United footballer Seth Johnson was charged on Thursday with
drink-driving, speeding and racing on the highway after he was arrested on a
motorway.
Johnson, 24, was arrested on the M62 near Bradford with a 23-year-old whose
case will now be considered by the Crown Prosecution Service.
A police spokeswoman said: "A 24-year-old man from Wetherby has been charged
with drink-driving, speeding and racing on the highway, and bailed to appear at
Dewsbury Magistrates Court on 29 August.
"In relation to the same incident a 23-year-old from York was reported last
night for summons for racing on the highway and speeding."
Police said the alleged incident took place at 12.08am today at the Catch Bar
roundabout at junction 26.
Earlier on Thursday Leeds United confirmed Johnson's arrest in a short statement
issued on its web site.
In the statement manager Peter Reid said: "The matter will be dealt with
internally."
It said the club would be offering no further comment.
Midfielder Johnson, who began his career at Crewe Alexandra, was signed by Leeds from Derby County for £7m in
2001.
