A convicted robber on suicide watch in prison was found hanging in his cell, the Home Office has confirmed.

Michael Proctor was discovered at Leeds Prison, Armley, at 1615 BST on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old was serving a life sentence for robbery after being jailed at Bradford Crown Court in May.

A Home Office spokesman said he was in a single cell in the segregation unit and had been on suicide watch.

He was pronounced dead 15 minutes after being found when attempts to resuscitate him failed.

The spokesman added: "A senior prison service manager will be holding an investigation."

The next of kin and police have been informed.
