Crowd surge at lights switch-on

Birmingham City Council says it will have to reconsider holding free events with major artists in future after sixty people were injured in a crowd surge at a concert to mark the switching on of the Christmas lights.

A barrier collapsed as the band JLS were performing at the event last night.

Four people needed hospital treatment. An investigation is underway.

Up to 5,000 people had been expected to turn out for the event at Millennium Point but reports suggested up to 27,000 people were at the site.

Martin Krol and Rachel Liddiard watched the crowd surge from their flat which overlooks Millennium Point
