'Cadbury to stay British' motion

Birmingham MPs have tabled a House of Commons motion calling for the "iconic brands" of Cadbury and Bournville to remain under British ownership.

Cadbury, which is based in Birmingham, has been the subject of a hostile takeover bid by US firm Kraft, although the bid has been rejected.

Selly Oak MP Lynne Jones, supported by MPs Richard Burden, Mark Fisher and John Hemming, has tabled the motion.

Cadbury has produced chocolate in Bournville for 130 years.

The Commons motion calls upon the government to make sure Cadbury remains in the hands of "an innovative British company faithful to the principles of its socially responsible founder."

The Cadbury family who founded the firm were Quakers and set up the village of Bournville for their employees.

The offer from Kraft will now be put to the firm's shareholders.
