Prisoner's death prompts inquiry

An investigation has begun following the death of a 21-year-old prisoner at a youth offenders' institution.

Steven Clayton was found hanging in his cell at HMP Brinsford near Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening.

The prison said staff and paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Clayton was serving a life sentence for grievous bodily harm and was not the subject of an open suicide and self-harm document, the prison said.

A prison service spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Clayton.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
