Couple injured as crash shuts M6

An elderly couple have been taken to hospital after a crash that closed the northbound carriageway of the M6.

It happened between junctions 4 (Coleshill) and 4a (Castle Bromwich) on the border of the West Midlands and Warwickshire at about 0615 BST.

The couple were in a Renault Megane which overturned after colliding with a Mercedes and a heavy goods vehicle.

The woman had head and arm injuries and was trapped. There were long delays, but the M6 fully reopened at 1120 BST.

The man was able to get out of the car by himself and suffered less serious injuries.

A man in the Mercedes car was left shocked but uninjured.
