A rose bush has been planted and plaque unveiled in the memory of a teenager who was stabbed to death in Birmingham while sunbathing eight years ago.

Rosie Ross, 16, from Aldridge, died after a random attack by a schizophrenic man in Centenary Square.

The bush and flower garden were planted at Birmingham City Hospital where staff tried to save her on 12 May, 2001.

The plaque was unveiled by Rosie's parents, Karen and Sean, who have set up a charity in her memory.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust has said her death had a big impact on staff.

A trust spokeswoman said Rosie underwent five hours of emergency surgery after the attack.

"Unfortunately the injury she sustained was too severe and she died whilst in theatre," she said.

'Something positive'

She said 'Rosie Day' aimed to celebrate the teenager's life and support the charity Rosie's Helping Hands, which was set up to help local young people in her memory.

The flower bed was planted in the hospital's Cancer Memorial Garden by people with disabilities involved in a pre-employment scheme which the charity supports.

The day was to include fund-raising games and activities.

Mrs Ross said they were delighted the hospital had organised the event.

"Eight years ago our lives changed forever with the loss of our beautiful daughter," she said.

"Sean and I immediately felt that something positive had to be done in memory of Rosie, even today that feeling is still very strong."

Inderjit Kainth, 44, pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility over Rosie's death in December 2001 and was detained indefinitely at a security hospital.
