No intervention over runway plans

Birmingham International Airport
Plans for a second runway at the airport were scrapped in 2007

The government has said it will not intervene over plans to extend the runway at Birmingham International Airport.

Solihull Council's planning committee decided last month to approve the £120m plan to extend the runway by 400m(1,312ft) for more long-haul flights.

It is thought the airport will be able to offer more non-stop flights to the west coast of America and the Far East.

The council said it was pleased the decision would not be scrutinised.

Work will begin once legal agreements between the airport and council have been signed.
