Police inquiries are under way at the scene

A police officer was seriously injured when he was hit by a car after signalling the driver to stop.

The 30-year-old officer, who is based in Stourbridge, was taken to hospital after he was hit by a silver Subaru.

West Midlands Police had been called to reports of people acting suspiciously near Hammond Way in Stourbridge at about 0140 BST.

When they tried to block a Subaru in Sandyacre Way and speak to the driver the car sped off, striking the officer.

Police said the driver of the car was wearing a balaclava.

Two or three other men in the car were wearing balaclavas or scarves over their faces, a force spokesman said.

The area has been closed for investigations by police experts.

Anyone with information about either the men or the silver Subaru, registration P482 CFH, is urged to contact West Midlands Police or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
