Council pledges £4m road repairs

A pothole
Birmingham City Council will spend £4m on repairing the city's roads

A city council will spend £4m on urgent works to repair roads damaged by last winter's freezing weather.

Birmingham City Council said the cold weather left some roads and pavements in a "critical condition."

The money will be spent on filling in pot holes and repairing damage to roads.

Councillor Len Gregory said some roads had become "skidding hazards" for motorists and the council would prioritise the worst-hit roads.

Mr Gregory, who is responsible for the city's transport and streets, said some roads had lost up to 30% of their surfacing material in just a few weeks.

He said: "A thorough inspection of roads since the severe weather has revealed an alarming amount of surface damage, leading to many roads and pavements reaching critical conditions.

"We recognised this problem quickly and are identifying roads in critical condition in order that we can commence a resurfacing programme as soon as possible."
