Patient attacked on hospital site

A hospital patient was badly beaten by four men in an unprovoked attack while trying to make a phone call.

The 36-year-old had left his ward at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton when the men started throwing snowballs at the phone box.

He was then attacked by the hospital's entrance and suffered a broken eye socket, ankle and fractured cheekbone.

Police said they believe there were several witnesses to the assault on Wednesday night.

Insp Glen Robson from West Midlands Police said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a man who had been receiving treatment at hospital when he was attacked by four men for no apparent reason.

"The assault left him with nasty injuries and we are keen to find the people responsible.

"The incident happened near the main entrance of the hospital and the area is likely to have been busy at the time with visitors leaving for the evening."
