Pair charged after child's death

A man and a woman from Birmingham have been charged jointly with manslaughter by gross neglect after a child's death.

The 36-year-old man and 22-year-old woman from the Tyseley area have been accused over the death of a four-year-old in April, police said.

They were also charged jointly with three counts of wilful child neglect.

The charges follow an incident in February which involved three children aged under four. The pair are expected before magistrates on Tuesday.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said there were no details of the children's gender, or of any post-mortem examinations.

Police said the two accused were charged on Monday morning after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

A spokesman for Birmingham City Council said a serious case review would be conducted into the death.

"The child's death is however the subject of a criminal and coroner's investigation and therefore the Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board will not be able to disclose any further information until these investigations are concluded," the spokesman said.
