Jobs to go as crisp factory shuts

Up to 300 jobs are at risk after a firm announced it would be closing its crisp factory in the Black Country.

Tayto Group, which took over the Red Mill Snack Foods site in Wednesbury earlier this year, is transferring work to its site in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Any redundancies will take place in phases and will not start until next year. They will continue through to 2010, a spokesman has said.

Red Mill is best known for its Mr Porky pork scratchings.

'Hard work'

A spokesman for Tayto Group said the issues were due to site suitability.

"It in no way reflects the hard work and commitment of the people at both locations," he said.

The decision was triggered by a decision by Proctor and Gamble to withdraw Pringle Minis, which were made at the Corby site.

"Whilst there will be job losses in the longer term there will be no immediate effect on job numbers," a spokesman said.
