Woman gives birth in city lay-by

A woman gave birth to a boy in a lay-by next to a McDonalds restaurant in Birmingham after going into labour while on her way to hospital.

Two ambulances and an incident support vehicle had been called to the incident thinking a road accident had happened.

The woman and her partner, from Edgbaston, had pulled into the lay-by on the A38 Bristol Road near McDonalds restaurant just after 0600 BST.

The mother and baby were taken to hospital and are said to be doing well.

Paramedic Karen Parry, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "It was a wonderful experience for everyone.

"We had a really hard 12 hour-shift and this was our last job of the night. What a nice way to finish."
