Commuter delays after fatal crash

Part of a road into Birmingham was closed to morning commuters after a crash in which a man died.

A Seat Leon car hit a tree on Hagley Road, near the Plough and Harrow hotel, shortly after 0300 BST, killing a man, who is thought to have been the driver.

A woman was taken to hospital but her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

An inbound stretch of the road was closed up to Five Ways Island but has now reopened.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The man believed to be driving the vehicle had suffered serious multiple injuries and unfortunately nothing could be done to save him."

The woman passenger was treated at the scene for multiple injuries before being taken to hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, and are particularly keen to speak to the occupants of a VW Golf car who stopped and spoke to people going to offer assistance at the scene.
