The results of post-mortem examinations carried out on the bodies of two young women found dead in a flat are expected to be released.

The pair were found at Jupiter Apartments near Birmingham city centre two days ago and their bodies removed overnight, police said.

A 28-year-old man arrested at a port in Kent on Tuesday morning on suspicion of murdering the women remains in custody.

Detectives said they were the victims of a "sustained and violent attack".

Det Ch Supt Dave Mirfield, from West Midlands Police, said one or more weapons were used and there was "a substantial amount of blood inside many of the rooms".

CCTV checked

There were also "signs of ransacking" in the fourth floor apartment in Ryland Street, in Ladywood.

The block has remained cordoned off since the discovery and a second area, a small building site on Sherborne Street, opposite the flats, was cordoned off earlier after a builder said he found blood there.

A spokesman said officers were in contact with the relatives of the dead women but have not released their names.

Searches have been carried out in and around the complex, including the car park below the apartments.

Officers have also been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and CCTV footage is being checked.

The apartments are part of the recently-built Jupiter development near to Broad Street, the city's entertainment centre.
