Tory conference security planned

Thousands of people including party leaders are expected to attend

About 800 police officers will be on duty and airport-style scanners will be used when the Conservative Party Conference comes to Birmingham.

The four-day event at the end of September will see thousands of people arriving at Birmingham's International Conference Centre (ICC).

The city hosted the Labour Party Spring Conference earlier this year under a massive security operation.

The heavy police presence will be paid for by a £2.5m Home Office grant.

The ICC will also put on a staff of 600 for the duration of the event.

The Labour Party conference in March saw Broad Street, Cambridge Street and Bridge Street closed to traffic, and some bus routes were diverted.
