Car sharing grows in popularity

A growing number of people across the West Midlands are starting to car share or cut down on the number of journeys they take.

AA figures reveal 40% of motorists are using their cars less with the rise in fuel costs to blame.

More drivers have been taking advantage of Birmingham's car sharing lane between Spitfire Island and Ashted Circus on the A47.

Edmund King of the AA said record prices at the pumps were hitting home.

"People just can't afford to drive the way they used to.

"So some people are cutting back, particularly on shorter journeys, or indeed many people are having to drive and cutting back in other areas such as household expenditure," he said.

The car sharing lane opened for a 12-month trial in November and operates during rush hour periods in the morning.
