Gallery remembers Munich victim

Duncan Edwards statue
A statue of Duncan Edwards already stands in Dudley

A gallery has been opened in the memory of footballer Duncan Edwards who died following the Munich air crash.

Edwards died aged 21 in hospital 15 days after seven other Manchester United players were killed when the plane crashed in February 1958.

A statue of the footballer is already in his home town of Dudley but now the museum and art gallery will have a permanent display of memorabilia.

It includes shirts he wore and football programmes of matches he played in.

Visitors will also be able to see photos, press cuttings detailing his career and his England caps.

Edwards, a full England international with 18 caps, grew up in The Priory, Dudley.

The United players, known as the Busby Babes, were returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade when the accident happened on 6 February 1958.

A total of 23 people died as a result of the BEA Elizabethan airliner crashing when it was trying to take off from Munich airport.
