Tram named after football legend

Billy Wright's daughter and granddaughter unveiled the tram

A tram has been named after Wolverhampton Wanderers and England football legend Billy Wright.

Wright, born in Ironbridge, Shropshire, captained Wolves throughout their golden era of the 1950s and also led the national side in three World Cups.

The Midlands Metro vehicle was named after Wright, who died in 1994, after he attracted 90% of a public vote.

It was unveiled at a ceremony in Wednesbury earlier attended by Wright's daughter Vicky and granddaughter Kelly.

It left on its first journey along the line, which runs from Birmingham through the Black Country to Wolverhampton, at 1130 BST.

Vicky Wright said she was delighted, saying: "It just makes his name live on forever which is lovely."

Wright's former team-mate Bill Slater said he wished his captain had been alive to see the ceremony but quipped: "We shall all be joining him quite soon I think."

Mr Wright was 70 when he died.
