People are being urged not to swim in locks and weirs after the Environment Agency was called out to five incidents along the River Nene in one day.
The agency attended incidents in Woodford, Irthlingborough, Cogenhoe, and Denford, all Northamptonshire, and Wansford in Cambridgeshire, on Sunday.
The temperature difference when jumping into cold water on a hot day causes the body to go into shock, the agency said.
A spokeswoman also warned swimmers of the dangers posed by narrow boats.
