Stolen homeless presents replaced

Wolverhampton church officials have praised local people for replacing gifts after Christmas presents set aside for homeless people were stolen.

Thieves had smashed their way into the Darlington Street Methodist Centre, which is a refuge for the homeless.

Rev Tony Kinch, from Darlington Street Methodist Church, said he was "absolutely overwhelmed" by the generosity of people in the city.

Food, clothes and money have been provided by residents.

Party held

Rev Kinch said: "I have myself handled over £1,000 in cash.

"Somebody phoned to say that they wanted to give a donation of £500, but hadn't got time to come into Wolverhampton.

"Would I go and meet them in a lay-by on the A449, just north of the M54?

"So I did and was given an envelope with £500 in."

A party will be held on Friday as planned and homeless people are to be given a bag containing scarf, razors, toothpaste, soap and a present.

The city council and the Catholic charity, Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd, had spent weeks collecting presents and food before the break-in.
