Staffordshire Bull Terriers and cross breeds have become fashionable
An animal refuge is taking in record numbers of Staffordshire Bull Terriers, following the breed's popularity.

Birmingham Dogs Home has taken in 200 unwanted pets in the last two weeks and at least 40% were Staffordshire Bull Terriers or their cross-breeds.

David Grant, a vet at the home, called the situation "totally out of control". "It is the worst I have seen in 40 years as a vet," he said.

The breed's fashionableness has led to a sharp rise in the number being bred.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies can sell for £500, as demand for them has grown.

Mr Grant said: "Our homing centres are full of this type of dog already," he said.

"Goodness know what it's going to be like after Christmas, I shudder to think."

He cited one case where a dog suffered "appalling" injuries after a group of boys set their dogs on the animal in a "deliberate attack" when it was tied to a park bench.
