'Vests for humans, not dogs' call
A Black Country MP is calling for police community support officers (PCSOs) in the West Midlands to be issued with stab-proof vests.

Tom Watson, Labour MP for West Bromwich East, issued a Commons motion after hearing police dogs in South Yorkshire had been issued with the vests.

He said it was "crazy" that one force gave vests to dogs while another force did not give them to support officers.

West Midlands Police has said support officers do not need the vests.

Mr Watson said: "It seems crazy to me.

"The procurement decisions are taken by individual forces.

"People just will not understand how one force in South Yorkshire can issue dogs with stable vests yet another decision in our regions can mean that PCSOs in the force do not receive them."

West Midlands Police does not issue PCSOs with stab vests as they are mainly employed for reassurance and do not deal with confrontations.
